Everything you need to know about JEE MAINS

Here is a guide to help students understand the new format of examination, which will be followed from 2013 for admission into IITs, ISM, IIITs, DTU and other CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions).

Let’s leave the IIT, ISM part to a later post and concentrate on what we need to know in order to get into NITs, DTU, IIITs and all other colleges, which were previously under AIEEE.

Am I eligible to write JEE Mains?


The minimum academic qualification needed for Mains examination is to pass in the final examination of 10+2 (or equivalent examination).

Also, those who entered 12th class in the year 2013 (the year of examination) can also appear in Mains examination provisionally.

How can I get into NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs?


Earlier, students were awarded ranks on the basis of their performance in the AIEEE examination only.

In the new format, ranking will be based on 40% weightage to your board performance and 60% to the Mains examination.

Some state universities may have a different weightage assigned to Boards and Mains instead of the regular 40-60 ratio.

I am a Dropper, Can I appear for the examination next year?


Yes, you can appear in the JEE (Mains) next year provided your 3 attempts are not over.

If you appeared for AIEEE examination last year, you have two more attempts left for JEE (Mains). And, if you already dropped two years, you have only one attempt left next year.

Can I Improve my board performance next year to improve my chances in JEE Mains?


Yes, you can appear for improvement examinations. But you will have to appear for all the subjects, and not partially (that is, you cannot appear for one or two subjects and add them to your previous years’ performance).

 
How should I prepare for the examination?


You need not worry about any special preparation for the new format,. Just prepare, as you would do for AIEEE.

Will there be negative marking in the examination?


Yes, (1/4) of the total marks allotted to the question will be deducted for incorrect response. There’ll be no deduction in marks for no response.

What is the syllabus for the Mains examination?


It is the same as last year AIEEE syllabus.

How can I apply for the examination?


You’ll have to apply for JEE(Mains) by filling up an Online application form at www.jeemain-edu.in. There’ll be no offline forms and you’ll have to apply online only.

The forms will be available online from 1st November, 2012.
