JEE 2013 Format for Admission to IITs, NITs, DTU & CFTIs

Many might be wondering what will be the new format for the common examination to enter IITs, NITs and all the other CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes). Here is a detailed scheme of examination for JEE (Mains and Advanced):

There will be a total of two examinations with effect from 2013:

1. Mains
2. Advanced

JEE (Mains) (Formerly, AIEEE)


This examination is similar to AIEEE and has the same format as it had. To recap, here is the format of the paper for JEE (Mains):

Paper – I (For BE/BTech)

One objective type paper containing Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of 3hrs duration

Paper – II (For BArch/BPlanning)

A paper of 3hrs duration containing the following parts:

Part 1 – Maths
Part 2 – Aptitude test
Part 3 – Drawing test

The merit list of admission to NITs, IIITs, DTU, and other CFTIs will be prepared by giving 40% weightage (suitable normalized) to Class XII(or equivalent examination) or other qualifying examination marks and 60% to the performance in the Mains examination.

JEE (Advanced) (Formerly, IIT-JEE)


If you stand in the top 1,50,000 candidates (including students from all categories) of JEE(Mains), then you will be eligible to appear for JEE(Advanced). Additionally, you’ll need to be in the top 20 percentile of your respective boards in Class XIIth in applicable categories.

The format for Advanced examination is as follows:

There will be two papers each of 3hrs duration containing objective type questions on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
